They say the third time is the charm and 1941s The Maltese Falcon by John Huston is proof. This film not only created the Film Noir genre, it remains the best of its category to this day. Utilizing low key, or high contrast cinematography and sharp angles, the film is as visually attractive as its cast. The original, once banned, pre-Code adaptation of THE MALTESE FALCON. Ricardo Cortez (who I associate more with playing villains) is Sam Spade. This is basically the same story, but with more sex and near nudity, risque dialogue, and straight out gay subtext. The cast isn't as memorable, except Dwight Frye (!) in the Elisha Cook Jr. role.
